Fire is, by its very nature, destructive. When fires occur, damage can be extensive and replacement or repair costs can be significant. That’s why insurers often turn to professional investigators to determine how it started, how it spread and if anyone is responsible for what occurred.

Sintra Engineering’s experience with forensic fire investigations has helped us develop a unique understanding of the challenges fires create for insurers. We know that time is of the essence, and have created a response protocol that allows our investigators to arrive on scene and begin gathering evidence rapidly and efficiently. This immediate response not only preserves evidence before it degrades, but ensures that cleanup and restoration can begin quickly. Once we’ve gathered evidence, our multi-disciplinary team begins a methodical investigation that explores every facet and factor involved in fire. Our goal with every fire investigation is to help our clients understand how it started and why, so that they can resolve matters quickly, efficiently and with confidence.

Sintra Engineering follows a precise investigative procedure to help establish fire origin and cause. We start by exploring the full scope of the destruction caused by fire, taking photos and documenting the entire scene. We then begin the meticulous process of examining the remains, detailing the resulting damage. Using this information, our investigators reconstruct the sequence of events that led up to the fire, using burn and smoke patterns to identify an area of origin.

Once we know where a fire began, we set out to determine what caused it. Drawing upon our multi-disciplinary expertise, we look at how fire behaves – how it grows and how it spreads – along with how mechanical and electrical systems work, to eliminate possible causes. This process of elimination helps us focus on the most likely causes, and create a scientifically sound opinion of fire cause.

What Does CFEI Stand For and Why Does it Matter?

CFEI stands for Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator. It is a designation given to those investigators who complete the fire investigator certification training offered by the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI), which ensures that the investigator has received training according to the standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Sintra Engineering has the largest team of CFEI certified engineers in Western Canada.

Knowing where and how a fire started is only part of the story. In order to identify opportunities for subrogation, you must also know why a fire started. Was it a component failure? A design deficiency? Faulty installation? Or was it human error? We dig to find those answers so that you can resolve matters of liability.

In order to understand why, our forensic investigators may utilize their understanding of everything from fire behaviour and construction techniques to electricity wiring, structural engineering and human behavior. We understand how appliances work, how heating and cooling systems operate and how electrical systems function, and know how to determine whether any of these factors could have contributed to the fire. In the event that we suspect equipment may be the source, we know how to examine the components of that product to determine why it failed. This attention to detail ensures our clients can count on our findings to help them determine liability and identify opportunities to subrogate.

Fire Modeling as an Investigative Tool

Fire modeling is an engineering tool used to estimate fire and smoke spread and the effects of fire suppression systems. Once the basic model has been created for a given fire, input conditions can be altered to determine the effect that the variations would have had on the spread of the fire and subsequent damage. If you have questions about whether the presence of appropriate fire suppression systems or fire retardants would have mitigated fire damage, contact one of our fire specialists to discuss the benefits of fire modeling.

Vehicle fire investigation is a specialized area that requires highly focused expertise and experience. Vehicular fire investigators must understand how the enclosed space of a motor vehicle affects fire behaviour, and how the various electrical, mechanical and structural components of a vehicle react to heat, smoke and flame. Without an in-depth understanding of both fire dynamics and vehicle characteristics, it can be difficult to pinpoint the exact cause or origin of a vehicular fire.

Sintra’s vehicle fire investigators have experience in not only determining where and how the fire started, but in helping clients determine at the outset if the size of the loss involved in a vehicle fire is worth investigating further. If the loss is substantial and worth pursuing, our forensic analysis can help clients determine possible avenues of subrogation, so that they can resolve matters with confidence.

Burning More Than Just Rubber

Vehicle fire investigation is a specialized area of fire investigation as evidenced by the Certified Vehicle Fire investigator certification program. As the value of vehicles and the corresponding replacement costs increase, so does the need to identify the cause of vehicle fires and determine liability.
